A Special Event

should you choose to get married or have your  civil partnership ceremony in Croydon Register Office our aim will be to make your day very special,leaving you to enjoy the occasion with your families,friends and each other.

You may wish to have a simple affair with with just two witnesses or a more traditional ceremony with best man,bridesmaids,guests,music,readings,video and photographs. Whatever your preferences,we will be happy to discuss the arrangements with you.

Witnesses

You will need to ask two people,either friends or relatives to witnesses your ceremony.They must be credible Witnesses and have sufficient command of the English language to understand the ceremony.

Photography

Taking photographs during the Ceremony is not permitted but there will be ample time for photographs after the signing of the Register/Schedule.A single video recording is permitted,but please inform the Superintendent Registrar beforehand.Video recorders should be hand-held and have their own power source.

The Queen's Gardens,with its stairways,fountain and colorful flower beds,is immediately opposite backdrop the Register Office .If provide a wonderful backdrop for photography.

Music

Music will be played at appropriate times during the ceremony.IF you have a particular piece of music or song that you would like played,please discuss this with the Superintendent Registrar at least seven days before your wedding

interpreters

If either of you is unable to speak or understand English,you will need to bring an interpreter along with you.He or she could be a family member or friend.You will be asked to repeat the words used in the Ceremony in English.

Afterwards the interpreter will be asked to sign the Register as one of your witnesses and also to sign a declaration to confirm both of you have understood the full meaning of the Ceremony.

The ceremony

There is no need to be nervous about the Ceremony.Remember the Superintendent Registrar is there to help guide you through all you have to say and do.

Once  everyone is seated,the Superintendent Registrar will say a few words of welcome and then ask as apart of the Ceremony,to repeat the following declaration and contract for marriages.

The giving or exchange of rings may take place if desired 

The Superintendent Registrar will then add the closing words and then the Registrar will complete registration of your marriage.

Both of you will be asked to check carefully and sign the entry in the marriage register,which your witnesses must also sign.The birds  signs in the name by which she was known before the Ceremony. 

Finally,both the Superintendent and Registrar will sign the entry and the Registrar will then present the marriage Certificate,by tradition,to the bride.

The ceremony,including the preliminary discussions with Registrar,will last about 20 minutes.

Giving Notice of Marriage

If you wish to get married in a register office,at other premises approved for marriage,or a church other than the Church of England,you will both need to give notice of marriage to the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you and your partner  live. 

Notice is given to the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you have resided for at least seven nights.

Fifteen clear days must elapse after the notice is given before the marriage can take place. 

If the bride and groom live in different districts,notice must be given in each district within 7 days of each other.

The Legal Formalities

You will be asked for your name,address,age,marital status and occupation.

You will need to produce evidence of identity such as your passport and a proof of residence in Croydon(e.g. utility bill).checks are made to confirm this information.

For those who have been married previously,you will need evidence that the marriage have ended,i.e.a decree Absolute which must have an original court stamp if you have been divorced,or the death certificate of your late spouse if you have been widowed.The information you provide must be in English.

If you are under 18 you will need  to produce evidence of consent form parent or guardian.

Marriage Appointment Time

It is important that you arrive at the Register Office ten minutes before the time shown on your Appointment Card.Please make allowance for possible traffic delays and time for ceremony photographs.

Although we make every effort to accommodate late arrivals,your ceremony may have to be postponed if you or any of your guest are late.

Civil Partnerships

Since 5 December 2005,you have been able to give notice of your intention to enter into a same-sex civil partnership.The first   civil partnerships were formed on 21 December 2005.You will need to make an appointment to register.

you are not obliged to have Civil Partnership Ceremony,but,if you decide to have one,this should be discussed with the register office staff before the day.Sample ceremonies are available for your perusal.

How to give notice of your intended partnership to Croydon Council.You should,at the of giving notice,have been resident in Croydon for the previous seven days.

If you live outside Croydon,you will need to contact you local council.Please note that the same residence rules apply.

If either of you has been married or been in a partnership,you will have to produce evidence that it has been dissolved.

Please Note: the minimum legal age for registering a civil partnership is 16 years of age,however written consent may be required for anyone under 18.

Comfort and Convenience 

for the comfort and convience others,drinking or eating is not permitted inside the Register Office.

Please help keep the Register Office tidy and attractive by asking your guest to wait until you are outside the building before throwing confetti.In preference to paper confetti,we recommend the use of environmentally-friendly dried or fresh rose petals or rice.
